Pretrial Supplementary Data

In addition to the main Virginia pretrial data, based upon the inputs from policy makers, government officials, and researchers, the Commission determined that it is also necessary to have a supplementary data that includes all contact events in a given calendar year. The data includes any contact event regardless of whether it is the second or subsequent contact event for the same individual. While the supplementary data includes several important fields like “whether a defendant was ultimately released during the pretrial period”, the fields listed in the data are limited and not reflecting any follow-ups, such as final dispositions, pretrial outcomes, or type of attorney at the case closure. Nevertheless, the data can be utilized for particular research purposes. Please refer to the Virginia Pretrial Data Project Codebook to comprehend any field available in the data. The only field that was newly added to this supplementary data is “ContactEventNum”, which reflects the sequence of the contact events if an individual has more than one contact event in a given calendar year.
